DAVID CONFRONTING GOLIATH
DAVID AND GOLIATH
First Samuel 17
One of the wonderful and well-known myths in Judaism and in the whole world is the fight between David and Goliath. This shows the victory of the minority over the majority, the weak over the strong, righteousness over wickedness, poverty over plenty. The fight between David and Goliath took place in the valley of Elah. According to the story Goliath's height was six cubits and a span opposite David who was short. Goliath was protected by a coat of mail, a bronze helmet and greaves on his legs, a javelin and a spear. David, however, was unprotected. His only weapon was a sling. The biblical account describes the verbal confrontation between them and the sling and stone with which David strikes Goliath's forehead.
The artist Daniel Avital illustrates the fight in the valley of Elah, the small number of Israelites in the battle confronting the Philistine majority , David's courage and determination opposite Goliath who is well protected and bears an exaggerated sense of security.
